The second ‘blogette’ of the weekend about Geoff Thompson

    By DBL | November 28, 2008

Instead of calling this the second lazy blog of the weekend, I’ve delved into the dark and crazy corridors of my mind to find the word Blogette, the same part of the grey matter that gave light to the word BlogSprog (this being the first fledgling of The BlogMum).

A Blogette is like a baguette, not a cob, a sarny or a french stick, it has it’s own entity in being a unique version of the same ingredients of all of the above but different.

Enough of such drivel I hear you cry!

The blogette today is to give some credit to someone who has made a mark on making me who I am, there are very few of these people.  This person is Geoff Thompson, author, BAFTA winning writer, teacher and martial artist.

I really can’t recall how first started to read about Geoff and his books, I first read  ‘Watch my Back’ on the bus on the way to and from work way back in 2001 when I was heavily into Kickboxing. Such fascinating reading, I went on to read more books, ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’ was next, I then started to read another set of his books that really changed the way I thought, these were, Fear the Friend of Exceptional People, The Great Escape and one of my favourites, The Elephant and the Twig.

The Elephant and the Twig explains firstly how baby elephants are tied to a heavy log so they can’t get away, they fight for all they’re worth until eventually they give up without hope and stop pulling so even when they are big strong animals they only need a twig tied to them but they don’t pull away because they have been conditioned from a young age to stay within their given restraints, ’inside the box’ as they say.

Human beings that have the same conditioning will live within the constraints given to them by their parents and peers, never reaching out, never trying something different and never finding the secret to ‘Living Their Life and Fulfilling Their Dreams’ because the ‘twig’ is too heavy to pull away from because it always has been so it’s not worth trying.

I recommend the reading of his articles, listening to his podcasts from the website or searching on itunes. Geoff made me realise I can do what I want, when I want, if I want it :)

Thank you for ‘Everything That Happens to Me is Good’, I took solace after the death of my brother from your podcast about this book, it takes some understanding when the words ‘My brother died today but it was a good day’ are said, read his book and find out why.

Give it a read and tell me what you think.

    Anorak is thankful ;)
